John Adams - Thomas Jefferson Lid Card

As delegates to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson developed a mutual respect, which blossomed into a unique friendship spanning the rest of their lives. After collaborating on the historic Declaration of Independence and playing crucial roles in the American Revolution, Adams and Jefferson later served together as American diplomats in Great Britain and France.

Their political views were not always so compatible, however, and their time spent in the White House led to a rift in their great friendship. Adams’ single term as President was beset by ferocious attacks from Republicans and unpopular domestic policies, leading to his loss to Jefferson in the 1800 presidential election. For more than a decade, Adams and Jefferson had little interaction until a mutual friend encouraged them to speak again. After their reconciliation, Adams and Jefferson wrote to one another until their deaths on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Their historic correspondence represents a lasting legacy of thoughts and ideas in American literature.
